What is fluency?

  • Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and use effective problem-solving strategies that often result in self-correction.
  • Fluency is the ability to read at a conversational pace.

Why is fluency important?
  • Fluent readers do not sound choppy or awkward whenever they read.
  • Fluent readers find reading to be enjoyable.
  • Fluent readers are able to comprehend the text that they are reading.

When should fluency be taught?
  • Fluency is a skill that is taught throughout elementary school.
  • In kindergarten, teachers aim to develop students who are able to name letters quickly and accurately. In first grade, students should be able to read one-syllable words (or more), and in second grade students should be able to begin reading with expression and prosody. In third through sixth grade, teachers try to build the child's rate, accuracy, and expression by providing opportunities for their students to read. Furthermore, each year there is a target the teachers aim for the students to reach.
